The Military could Learn Something About Security from Self Storage in Riverdale, Utah

As a US Air Force captain, I’ve moved my family around a lot. And I’ve gotten to know a lot of storage facilities too. I have to say the storage units in Riverdale, Utah, near Hill Air Force Base, put the military to shame for security.

When you move every few years, you learn to be light on your feet. This includes making friends easy and, at times, living out of boxes. My four kids are used to this. When I was stationed at Hill, we found a self storage Riverdale, Utah facility nearby that had modern security and a friendly older couple as managers. I didn’t realize how friendly they were at first, or how seriously they took their jobs.

When my wife went in to rent our unit, the managers welcomed her to the area warmly. They gave her a personal tour, gave her homemade pie, and spent the afternoon telling her everything she could ever want to know about Riverdale. We later realized this wasn’t just a way for them to pass the time, it was their way of getting to know each one of their tenants personally as a foolproof security measure.

It’s not that storage units in Riverdale, Utah are particularly dangerous; these attentive managers just saw this as their job. A few weeks later when I went to access the unit, the old man was at the gate (He was always at the gate since he lived on site). So was his guard dog. I punched in the security code and the gate opened. He stopped me as I drove through and began a CIA grade interrogation. Who was I? What was I doing? Why didn’t he recognize me. Before he let me proceed, he called my wife’s cell phone to confirm I was the right man. Then he gave me a warm hand shake and introduced me to his extremely large Doberman, Bismarck.
